Barri's music performances began as a teenager in Akron, Ohio when her mother gave book reviews at the Junior League and other professional organizations.  Barri played piano pieces as background and also accompanied soloists for those programs. Over the years, she has accompanied choirs and played hymns for church singing.

Poet Stephen Corey, current editor of “The Georgia Review” has written about her poems: “The powers in Barri Armitage’s poetry emerge from inner bedrock and wellsprings that nearly all readers and writers would profess to yearn for, to live from.  But, in truth, most of us would be garbled or silenced by the personal tragedy she has channeled into some of the finest elegiac writing of recent years—and subsequently into love poems that can achieve marvelous effects….”

Barri comments,"The bedrock and wellsprings are not of myself.  May I be useful to God, to Whom all glory belongs".
